What Type Of Music Should I Expect?

There's a new audio compression format called MPEG-1 layer 3, or MP3 for short. Songs recorded as MP3s sound almost as good as songs in CD format and take up less than a tenth of the space. That means they're easy to transfer via the Internet and store on your hard drive. The MP3 file format has made music more popular on the Usenet than ever before.

The music containing newsgroups include, but are not restricted to the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3 hierarchy. In these groups you can find obscure music like forgotten dance hits, or rare as well as ethnic music along with popular rock n'roll, jazz, country hits and more. And it's not suprising to find entire albums or extended remixes which may include many songs.



The Decades Groups
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.19xxs - Also known as the decade groups. In these groups you can find the sounds from a specific decade, as indicated by the group name. They include alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1950s, alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1960s, alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1970s, alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1980s, alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.1990s. For songs that were recorded before 1950 there exists a group called alt.binaries.sounds.78rpm-era It is "for the posting of binary files from the beginning of recorded sound to the end of the age of 78 records in the late fifties."
The "Genre" Groups
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3. - The "genre" groups. These are groups that have been created to contain a specific type of MP3 posting. They include but aren't limited to Dance: alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.dance, Remixes: alt.binaries.remixes.mp3, Beatles: alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.beatles, Classical music: alt.binaries.sounds.music.classical, Country music: alt.binaries.sounds.country.mp3 , Grateful Dead: alt.binaries.gdead, Japanese pop music: alt.binaries.sounds.jpop, Jazz music: alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.jazz, Latin music: alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.latin


New groups are being formed almost daily, including those which contain music. We have described just a few. There is no central authority as to which groups are carried or by whom, so each ISP (Internet Service Provider) makes its own policy. The groups that we list are carried by most servers
